Can Dogs Eat Cheese?

Many dogs love cheese, and it’s often used as a high-value training treat or a way to hide medication. In small amounts, cheese can be safe and even beneficial thanks to its protein and calcium content. However, not all dogs tolerate dairy well. Some are lactose intolerant and may experience digestive upset, including gas, diarrhea, or bloating after eating cheese. It’s important to monitor your dog’s reaction and choose the right type and quantity based on their individual tolerance.

Safer cheese options for dogs include mozzarella, cheddar, cottage cheese, and Swiss—all lower in lactose and fat. Avoid blue cheeses, flavored varieties, and anything containing garlic, onion, or herbs, which can be toxic to dogs. Even with safer options, moderation is key. Cheese should only be an occasional snack—not a daily treat—and portions should be adjusted based on your dog’s size, health, and activity level.

Cheese can also be used creatively as a training reward or to help administer medications, but it’s not suitable for every dog. Pups with pancreatitis, obesity, or food sensitivities should steer clear. Always observe how your dog reacts to cheese and consult your veterinarian before introducing new foods—especially if your dog has a health condition or is on a special diet.
